How to connect to the wired network from a Mac if you are a student or an employee at NTNU.

Introduction

All devices connecting to NTNU's wired network is asked to authenticate (log in with username and password). Authenticated devices gets, depending on each users belonging, access to NTNU's computer network for employees or for students.

Devices which don't authenticate will get access to an alternative computer network. Today this alternative network lacks limitations, but eventually this will turn in to a guest network with limited rights and limited access.

Log in from a Mac

After logging in to the machine, a dialog box asking you to log in to the nework will show up:

Enter your NTNU-username followed by @ntnu.no and then enter your password. Do not select a sertificate in the topmost field. Select "Remember this information" and press "OK".

You are now authenticated and the machine is connected to NTNU's wired computer network.

Q&A

Do I have to authenticate?

You should authenticate. If you don't authenticate you will be connected to an alternative network which eventually will have limited rights and access. Without authentication you may get problems using printers or connecting to you home directory.

The dialog box asking for username and password does'nt show up?

On a Mac the same authentication type is used when connecting to wired network as when connecting to Eduroam. If you already are correctly authenticated to Eduroam, additional authentication for wired network might not be necessary. Check if the network is working properly before troubleshooting further.

What if I have entered a wrong username and/or password?

If you have authenticated yourself incorrectly (for instance by omitting @ntnu.no after username) and the network is not working well, the easiest solution is to delete the existing authentication element. Here is how to do it:

1. Select Spotlight (magnifier at the top right corner). In the search field write "keychain access".
2. From the search results, start the program Keychain Access.
3. In Keychain Access you will find the authentication keys for 802.1x. Write "802" in the search field at the top right corner.
4. The key Default 802.1x Password is the saved password for wired network. Click to select, right-click and delete. To be certain, do the same with the key eduroam (if it exists).
5. Close all windows. After a while (it might require a restart) the dialog box for authentication will show up again. Make sure to add @ntnu.no when you specify your username.
