This is a specialization project ‘course’, which is exclusively designed for the students in the EWEM (European Wind Energy Master) program in the Offshore Engineering (OE) track. The EWEM program is a joint master program between TU Delft, NTNU, DTU and University of Oldenburg, and there are four study tracks. The students in the OE track follows a study track at DTU, TU Delft, NTNU in the first three semesters, respectively, and can select either TU Delft or NTNU for the last semester for thesis work. However, these students will do their thesis work under the joint supervision between the TU Delft and NTNU supervisors and will get the diploma from both TU Delft and NTNU. Department of Marine Technology is responsible for the OE track students at NTNU. Typically, there are 6-12 students per year in this track. This specialization project, 15 ECTS, involves the literature review for their thesis work. This EWEM programs started from 2012 and through these years, a guideline has been developed for both EWEM students and NTNU professors, regarding the purposes, contents, reporting, grading and practical arrangement for project work. However, the exact topics and focus of the project work depends on the selection of the thesis topics from the students, within the research areas of offshore wind turbines.

Similar as other specialization project at the Department of Marine Technology, in this specialization project course, it is the individual supervisor’s responsibility to guide the EWEM student in this literature review. From the program point of view, at the beginning of the autumn semester, a welcome meeting is organized to meet the new cohort of the EWEM students and inform them about their study and project work in this semester at NTNU. The thesis topics and therefore this project work are often proposed by a industry company that each EWEM has contacted, which typically starts in April or May before they come to NTNU. It is then emphasized that the EWEM students should finalize the definition and the selection of their NTNU and TU Delft supervisors before mid-September. However, in some cases, this process is delayed and then it influences the whole process of the project work and the thesis work in the spring semester. The main reasons for such delay are related to the different practices between NTNU and TU Delft regarding the period for project and thesis work. Moreover, in such joint program, there are more parties that are involved in the supervision (NTNU, TU Delft and industry company) and this complicates the coordination. This should be further emphasized and monitored for the future cohort of the students. This project is 15 ECTS. The supervisors typically have weekly or bi-weekly meetings with the EWEM students to guide their literature review for the selected thesis topic and in some cases to refine the thesis research focus. The involvement of many supervisors helps the students to better understand the research needs from the industry as well as the quality from the academic point of view. In some cases, the EWEM students also participate in the discussions for similar topics with other fellow students of the same supervisors. Regarding the assessment form, a project report is prepared by each student and submitted to NTNU for assessment. It is then the main supervisor who has the responsibility to assess and grade, under the agreement with other supervisors for the EWEM student. Due to the difference in the practice for project and thesis work, TU Delft does not require and grade a separate project work report. Instead, TU Delft evaluates the whole master thesis report, which includes parts of the literature project work at NTNU. Since the EWEM students spend about two months (for 15ECTS), working on the project report, the quality of such project report is in general very good. The EWEM students in this project work or the thesis work (TMRTMR5950 - Wind Turbine Energy - Offshore Engineering, Master Thesis) may have very different research topics, although the research areas focus on offshore wind turbines. The courses (only two courses of 7.5ECTS each that are required) at NTNU for EWEM students are selected under the suggestion of the supervisors, with topics that are relevant for the students’ project and thesis work. Selections of four modules to form two courses allow the students to cover more background that might be required for thesis work.

Videre skal studenten lære å gjennomføre et større selvstendig prosjektarbeid, inklusive å utarbeide en prosjektplan med milepæler, rapportere delresultat og skrive en prosjektrapport i hht. vedtatte standarder.
