At the Dept. of Electric Power Engineering, it is only from Autumn 2021 that Specialization Projects (15 credits) have been treated on par with the regular 7.5 credit courses with respect to formal mechanisms for course reports and reference group reports.

In Autumn 2020, the first year KASPER was used as a tool for quality assurance of study programmes at the Dept., the course reports for specialization projects (which have different course codes depending upon the study programme the specialization project belongs to) did not include a formal assessment of the way the ‘course’ was organized and administered; only the standard information on course content, learning outcomes, learning methods and activities, and assessment practices, as shown in the NTNU course webpage, was input. However, this year, a formal student reference group was organized (common to all specialization projects, irrespective of course codes), and feedback was sought on the perceived quality of the administerial aspects of the projects in terms of their allocation and supervision. Pål Keim Olsen was the formal course coordinator, while Vijay Venu Vadlamudi was involved in the operational aspects. Allocation procedure:It is the Department’s responsibility to come up with sufficient project proposals from the ‘faglærere’(supervisors) for all the students who are in the study programmes at the Department; All the proposals are uploaded online in the preceding Spring semester and students are then required to select five proposals from the list in the order of their desired priority. The following is the basis for the allocation of the projects. “As a general principle, allocation will be based on the priority given by the student. In the event that a specific project is selected as a first priority by several students, then grade point average will be the tie-breaker, and so on. There can be certain exemptions: for example, the supervisor might have prior reservation of a specific project for a specific student. In some cases, it may so happen that a student might not get any of the five prioritized projects. In such cases, a subjective allocation (based on the student’s study-track and the available list of projects) will be made.” Supervision:The project allocation is finalized well before the start of the Autumn semester. Students are required to get in touch with their allotted supervisors in the first week of semester-start, and the supervision process formally begins. In almost all the cases, the Masters project in the subsequent semester is a continuation of the specialization project work. Assessment:Students submit a specialization project report on Inspera, with the last working day before Christmas vacation as the standard deadline for submission. Results are usually provided within a month (taking into account the Christmas vacation break). The assessment of the submitted project reports is done based on a standard template used by the Department. Presentation:As a tradition, students make a presentation of the specialization projects early in the Spring semester, to allow them the experience of dissemination of their work. This presentation has no bearing on the Student feedback:In the Autumn 2021 edition of the specialization projects, students have been quite positive about the overall organization and administration of specialization projects.

Action plans for the next edition of the course: <ul><li>General lecture on the introduction to the specialization projects to be given earlier in the semester, preferably in the first week of the semester-start.</li><li>Ensure that there is active participation in the reference group mechanism from students.</li><li>Continue to remind the supervisors and students alike about the need for a streamlined supervision process, including a mutual clarification of expectations and goals from the supervision process at the very start of the supervision. </li></ul>

* Selvstending prosjektarbeid med veiledning, eventuelt arbeid i mindre grupper. Det må avtales ved semesterstart dersom studenter skal arbeide sammen om prosjektoppgaven. * Obligatorisk deltakelse på oppstartsseminar som avholdes ved semesterstart.

This course contains a specialisation project of 15 ECTS credits. The specialisation project typically forms the basis for the Masters project. The course content varies depending on the specialisation profile the student is enrolled in, and the selected research problem. The research topic is in the field of Electric Power Engineering, covering one or more of the subfields:- Electric Power Systems- Electric Power Technology.

Knowledge: After completing the course, the student shall have obtained: * extensive background and knowledge in the selected research topic, which will enable him/her to address a precise research problem. * good knowledge in related topics. * good knowledge about relevant scientific literature. Skills: After completing the course, the student will be able to:  perform scientific literature review/survey.  utilise theory, methods, techniques, and tools necessary to address a research problem.  give an oral presentation of the research work carried out.  write a technical report according to a standard setup. General competence: After completing the course, the student will be able to:  communicate the research topic with specialists as well as general public.  develop applied project management skills, i.e., define and execute a project plan with milestones, intermediate deliverables, status reports, etc.  build scientific temperament in the acquisition of knowledge through research work.  obtain awareness of integrity and ethics in research work.- contribute to innovation and innovation processes.

 Independent/collaborative project work with guidance. It must be agreed at the start of the semester if students are to work together on the project assignment.  Participation in an introductory seminar at the beginning of the semester is compulsory.

 Regular meetings with supervisor(s).  The project work must be documented in a project report.  After submission of the report, the student must give an oral presentation of the project in front of employees and fellow students. The oral presentation does not affect the grade given for the project work. When selecting the research topic for the project, it is expected that the student in his/her Education Plan has a combination of courses that makes up sufficient professional background for successful project implementation. Exchange students must get acceptance of the topic and supervision of the project before arriving at NTNU.
