The development plan has been implemented.1) This year, the industrial content hasbeen added about practical aspects, including regulations and requirements forområde stabilitet consideration and how they are related to risk assessment.2) The group presentation has beenrevised to be closer to real problems that happens around us.3) More example questions are brought tothe lectures to facilitate the understanding.4) better planning were made to make theworking load smooth.

The coding skill, communication skills have been improved. Students mentioned that they forced them to learn coding during the group assignment. It was a bit challenging in the beginning but went well at the end.The coding skill of the students are roughly the same as in 2022. The presentation skills of students this year are better. Most of them showed good understanding of the material.There is one student who passed semester exam and group assignment but failed the final exam. The final exam shows that the candidate knows very little about what was taught. I think the reason behind is that the candidate hide behind the others during the group assignment and did not do the assignment independently.

The next semester, it would be better if we could add more materials in practice (consultant) and put some emphasis on sustainability and optimization.

The development plan has been implemented. 1) the students have moved from python package coding (as a black box) to basic coding which requires deeper understanding of the course material. This year, most students chose to code from scratch.2) the students were well trained for report writing and presentation through the group assignment. This fulfills the objective that students add value by having good communication skills.3) the course material is polished to make them even more visualized in abstract concepts.4) better planning were made to make the working load smooth.5) more examples were given to facilitate understanding.

The coding skill, communication skills have been improved. The students communication skills were better than in 2021, as we have emphasized the importance of presentation in the beginning.The coding skill has improved as we rise the standard of coding in 2022 and most student made it.

The course is still limited to academic content, due to the intensive mathematic analysis.It would be better in 2023 if we can integrate industrial design into the course and try to build the connection between the numbers (coefficients) and the background stories (theories).

The lecturer has been more familiar with the material and has more degree of freedom in lecturing the course. The students were generally satisfied with the lecture. The evaluation of this course has been much improved than that in 2020 fall semester.

The students have achieved the learning outcome. The added value is that the students noticed the importance of visualized presentation.

The lecturer tried to ask other students (than the reference group) about their impression about this course. They mentioned that the course was easy to follow and interesting to hear. They mentioned that the lectures were hybrid, which make it easy for student who cannot come to campus. The lecturer feels that there are still many points to improve:1) tag the lectures and try to make the lectures granular.2) encourage the students to participate more into the class discussion, try harder.

My own evaluation to my own work and that of the tutor is as follows:1) Information: The information of the course is not very well done due to my lack of experience in this course (first time lecturer). The plan has been made before I joined NTNU and there was some changes due to the covid situation. e.g. the mid-term and final exam have been changed to home exam. There are some students from abroad and they requested a different time for the exam.2) Tutorial class: The tutor was very hard-working and experienced. I really appreciate his work and assistance. It’s just that he may sometimes be too busy to answer all the email requests. I should have looked more into the tutorial class.3) Lecturing: It seems that the students are generally positive to the lecture quality. Some of the students are doing much better work than I expected. So I just complimented them honestly and they seemed to respond well with their better performance.More details:4) Knowledge gaining: most students who attend the class are positive to the lecturing and they would ask if there is anything confusing. I would also answer their questions by email or phone call.5) Skills building: The group assignment inherited from previous lecturers was very good. It helped the students to practice what they’ve learnt in the course very efficiently. It also reflects their misunderstandings in some concepts. After the group assignment, I wrote a detailed feedback for each of the groups. 6) General competence: I put more emphasis on the presentation part of the course. I encouraged them to practice presentation to make it clear, fluent, and succinct. I made them understand that our job as geotechnical engineering has two parts, 1) do the job rationally; 2) communicate with the client/co-worker efficiently. For the group assignment, I found many excellent groups that exceeded my expectation. My view is that the engineers that we trained should be not only excellent in expertise, but also excellent in presentation, both of which are integral part of a successful career forward.

The learning outcomes are as follows:KnowledgeThis course is about dealing with uncertainty: It’s better to be probably right than exactly wrong!The candidate should have knowledge of:- How to characterize and model uncertainties in geotechnical parameters (soils and rocks), quantify variability in soil profiles, loading and resistance factors as well as the calculation methods- Describing and formulating a geotechnical problem using a reliability approach- Incorporating uncertainties in conventional geotechnical analyses- Performing hazard analyses and consequence analyses of vulnerability and elements at risk- Performing reliability/risk and sensitivity analyses- In particular making quantitative evaluation of hazards related to slope or foundation failures, avalanches and earthquakes- Considering risk acceptance/tolerance criteria- Considering risk management and reduction measures (reliability based decision-making and mitigation). SkillsThe candidate can:- Identify sources of uncertainties in a given geotechnical problem, define relevant and critical failure modes or unwanted events- Assess probability of occurrence- Plan and perform reliability/risk analyses- Calculate/predict consequences- Make decisions based on reliability analyses- Recommend actions for risk reduction and/or risk mitigation. General competenceThe candidate can:- Make sound engineering judgments with a special focus on numerical simulations in geomechanics- Develop sustainable solutions for our built environment- Compose clear presentation. The candidates are encouraged to make rational and clear presentations in public, so that they may be prepared for communication in the future job market.- Work in teams.1) the learning outcomes are up to date and relevant to the course. It includes the most essential knowledge in this course, and it also involves some up-to-date methods in research community and the experience in industry.2) There are three ways to communicate the learning outcomes to the students: a) online lecturing, in 2020 the lectures are all online due to COVID. I tried my best to make the lectures interesting and attractive by visualizing the concepts in a humorous and funny way; the students like it; b) group presentation and interview; I asked the students to do a group assignment and then listen to their presentation and ask them questions; through this process we know what are their strength and weakness; I gave them written comments for each group so they know explicitly which part they should pay attention to; c) individual meeting to address their questions; there are students who had difficulties with the course; I invite them to have individual meetings.3) It is correlated to TBA5155 which I am teaching this semester. The TBA5155 is the basis of TBA5150.

1) The activities include lecture, assignment, Q&amp;A sessions, group presentation &amp; comment, review class. Basically, most of the students have mastered the essential knowledge points and skills of the course through lectures and assignments. The group presentation was specially designed to cover all the knowledge points. The students presented their results and answer the questions regarding these parts. Their misunderstandings or lack of knowledge will be full exposed. Then a written comment (including accuracy, clarity of presentation etc.) will be given so that they know explicitly which part they should pay more attention to. In other words, it's like a "diagnosis report". The students can also practice their presentation skills in this process. 2) In general, most students are motivated. I encouraged them to ask questions and stop me whenever they want. They ask a lot of questions. Some questions reveals very deep thoughts. Some of them did very good in the group presentation. They code everything by themselves and showed me very good slides and present in perfect fluency. Their report shows true understanding and high rigor. There are also some students (2 groups) who could not finish the report. They have their own difficulties. For them I gave them individual meeting afterwards and helped them to gain confidence and know about the essential knowledge points. 3) The learning environment is very free and easy. I tried to prepare the lecture in a visualized way, so that they can grasp the essential concepts. I encourage them to challenge me, stop me during lecture. My sense is that, I am learning together with them.

The learning outcome matches the form of assessment well.there are three ways of assessment: 1) assignment; 2) presentation; 3) examinationthe assignment and examination helps assessing the mastering of knowledge and skills. The presentation helps assessing the general competence.
