The course went well last time, so we did little.

It went well. The students acheived the learning outcomes: the exam resuls were OK.

I didn't use the reference group, which I should have done more. I got feedback during the contact sessions, so this wasn't terminal, but something for me to work on.

Studenten har oversikt over forutsetninger og praktisk bruk av multippel regresjon, variansanalyse, analyse av kategoriske data og generaliserte lineære modeller ved hjelp av programpakken R. Videre har studenten kunnskap om hvordan simuleringsmetoder kan benyttes for å undersøke estimatorers egenskaper, i hypotesetesting og for beregning av teststyrke. Studenten kjenner også til numeriske metoder for tilpasning av ikke-standard modeller ved hjelp av sannsynlighetsmaksimering og hvordan hypotesetesting og beregning av usikkerhet i parameterestimater kan beregnes basert på asymptotisk teori. 2. Ferdigheter. Studenten kan håndtere og analysere innsamlede datasett ved hjelp av programpakken R. Studenten er også i stand til å formulere enkle, ikke-standard statistiske modeller, omsette dette til programkode, samt å tilpasse slike modeller ved hjelp av ferdige numeriske optimeringsmetoder. The course ran well, I think. I got to the point where it is mainly turning the same handles as before. This probably means I need to look through the material next year and work out what should be improved.

The learning outcomes are still relevant, so have not been updated.


I think this has settled down into a pattern where we have a. Flipped classroom and the students work in groups. One the whole it seems to work well. This is a third year course, so most of the students already know each other.

Formative assessment is done through group exercises which are handed in and marked with feedback. I think this is working well, and it dovetails with the flipped classroom approach nicely. 

The exam worked better the year: basically, it needed some harder questions. This implies the teaching is improving: most of the students are getting the basic ideas, so I have to do more to challenge the better students.

There were no specific plans to change the teaching: it has been running well over the last couple of years. The exam was much better this year, after lsst year's did not do a good job of discriminating the good from the OK. The trick was that some of the questions had to be harder.

Based on the exam and assessments, the students achieved the main learning outcomes. In the last couple of years the only fails have been a long way from a possible pass mark, and most students have been satisfactory or better. The feedback from the students has generally been positive: the structured modules are appreciated, and criticisms have been minor.

The course seems to be running well. My impression is that this is time to take a deeper look at it to see where it needs improvements, e.g. in extra material (more interactive apps? Better videos?). If I don't do this, the course will drift. Thus my plan is to go through the course and assess what can be added, mainly to vary the learning materials, but also to check that the current materials still work.

The course seemed to go well, and based on the exam the students learned the main points in the learning outcomes. We moved more towards a flipped classroom, which worked well online (so there was very little lecturing). For 2022, if we are teaching in the classroom, a room like VE-22 (SMASH) will be vital, as there will be little to no lecturing, so we need the students to be in groups where I and the TAs can walk round and discuss with them.

The learning outcomes are still relevant, so were not updated this year. We made them explicit each week, and had made them the basis of the development of each week’s material.

Teaching online was less of a problem than last year. We have been moving towards a flipped classroom, so we moved towards a model where the students turned up and went into breakout rooms, and I and the student assistants moved between the rooms to discuss and help. This developed to work well – teaching was interactive, and the students learned as a group at their own pace: each week they had a module (plus exercises) so they knew what they had to achieve. After a couple of weeks the learning environment developed well, as we and the students got to know each other, and what to expect.

The assessment was through exercises, which mirrored the learning goals, and the exam. This year’s exam did not feel well calibrated, so I will work to create a better plan for exam writing.

The course is still improving, and on the whole I am satisfied. The exams showed that the students had learned the material. After the lockdown we moved to mainly providing the material as worksheets. This seems to have worked OK, but the reference group’s concerns about having the material also presented as a lecture are well founded. Before the lockdown we found that lecture theatres were awful for the style of teaching we were using, as it made it difficult to move around and help the students as they worked with the exercises. Fortunately we managed to move one session to VE-22, which made it tolerable to teach.

The learning outcomes are checked and (if necessary) revised every year. They are given to the students on Blackboard. The connection seems to be good: they are only slightly revised from previous years, and the course is developed fairly tightly within the constraints that the learning outcomes provide.

The activities seem to work well. We are improving tensions at the start of the course between the students having to learn the conceptual framework, whilst also learning how to code in R. A focus on active learning works well - this year there was a good rapport with the students and teaching assistants, which helps to motivate the students. This was even seen in the exam, where some of the answers to the final question were very funny (and also correct). Apparently the way to deal with a cyclops is to throw a sheep at it, and run away. As noted above, the room layout for the lecture is vital. Because much of the work is active, and preferably in groups, a traditional lecture theatre is a pain, and makes it harder for the students to work effectively, and for the teachers to have discussions with them.

The correspondence is largely OK, although it is something I need to think about: it is possible that there is a better way to approach it. In the reference group report the students did note that the exam didn't ask a lot about R use, even though the course covered that. We will discuss whether this means we should adjust the learning outcomes and thus the exam (the problem is that R is needed to learn the statistics, so learning R is only secondary).
