Emnet skal være en forberedelse til teoriarbeidet i masteroppgaven. Sentrale spørsmål er: Hva trengs for å gjennomføre et forskningsprosjekt? Hva gjør et prosjekt vitenskapelig? Teoriarbeidet sikter på bevisstgjøring av valget og anlegget av det perspektivet som brukes i spesifikke prosjekt.

This course only had one student this semester. So the format was way out of the norm and I was not able to get any feedback.

This course continues to be difficult because of low student numbers. With low numbers and inconsistent attendance it is hard to build up any momentum in the course. I suggest we change the course so the students are required to attend an initial set of seminars. Then the remainder of the course is guided by the student interests. i let the students decide which book we started with. This may have been a mistake. we only went forward when it was clear some students had actually prepared for the seminar. This meant that we only managed to get through one book from the Pensum.

Since there were few students it did not make sense to do a survey. In general I think the course was too hard for the students. Despite this the exam performance was not that bad. This appears to be because students focus on the exam instead of the course itself. I need to think of ways to integrate the two better.

The leading idea of this class was to connect knowledge about theories with the application of this knowledge. Throughout the course, the participants were familiarized with a scope of theories of religion that were historically contextualized and “mapped” according to different approaches to religion in religious studies. The participants were also familiarized with the basics of academic language (“theory”, “method”, “methodology”, “religion”). In parallel, the students were asked to sketch their first idea of a possible topic of their future MA theses by briefly sketching this topic and its leading question; explaining the approach/possible method; and providing a first reflection on what they think their individual studies stand for. From then on, the theories of religion were discussed in the light of these “mock” MA topics to explore their individual usability as much as their general applicability. Accordingly, the exam aimed at explaining, comparatively discussing, and contrasting at least two different theories of religion. In addition to documenting their descriptive and analytical abilities, the students were asked to reflect on how different theoretical positions would alter their perspective on a research topic.In general, the idea of connecting theory and practice was approved by the students, but it also turned out to be difficult to implement for some.Since the group was small and two of the participants lived in Oslo, the students voted for proceeding with most of the classes on Zoom.

There were 4 students in the course, 3 who participated actively. Generally I think student motivation last semester was quite low on account of the pandemic. The students seemed less excited to work than in the past. We did not have a reference group because the class was so small, so my report is based on discussions I had with the students.

I think these match pretty well. One problem is that the students do not seem to have enough coursework in Religious Studies/History of Religions to have a good enough foundation for many of the questions in the course. Most of our course offerings are in "Area Studies" and generally students have not been thinking much about religion as a discipline. With regard to these two learning outcomes, I am not sure the course gets there:- knowledge of the interdependency between the religious practice and cultural life - knowledge of the ethical challenges facing research concerning religion similarly with skills- produce academic accounts of the relationship between religion and culture- exert ethical assessment on research accounts within religious studies  The course does not explicitly go into the relation between religion and culture. Of course implicitly this is a huge topic. I was not aware this was something we should focus on since it is hard enough just getting students to think theoretically about religion. Adding culture to the mix makes things more complicated. The ethical issues are dealt with more in RVI 3020 - though I must say this is not something I focus on. As far as the pensum - I think this is something we should talk about together in the department. As far as I could see the pensum this year was better than it has been in the past - simplified and easier for students. I think they still have trouble reading all of this material in English. For the most part it did not seem like they were prepared for most classes. There is a problem because in a lot of ways the students are not ready for highly theoretical texts in Religious Studies. I still think it would be better if each of the faculty in the department offered a few weeks of method and theory for 3010 and 3020.

The seminar form works well for this course.

The final paper in the course is good.
