Emnet omfatter et studium av religioner i Sør-Asia, med hovedvekt på buddhismen. Emnet skal dermed gi studenten en grunnleggende innsikt i buddhismens lære og praksis, og rollen denne religionen har som en forbindene faktor for flere asiatiske kulturer (India, Tibet, Sri Lanka, Burma, Silkeveien etc) Både fortid og nåtid representeres. Hinduistiske religioner er et sekundært fokus. Emnet gir også en innføring i andre religioner som har gjørt seg gjeldende i regionen, som jainismen, islam, sikhismen og kristendommen.

The course was generally good. It once again benefited greatly from the structure set up in previous semesters, that began with theoretical and methodological concerns before taking students through a survey of the historical birth and development of South Asian religious traditions and their spread (especially Buddhism) into other parts of Asia. It also benefited from my previous experience teaching the course in 2019. Because the course was similar, the background reading was less, and this enhanced my ability to focus on the important points for the students and more variety in teaching styles. Due to Coronavirus, we had to shift the teaching online, and cancel the Oppgaveskrivekurs class on EndNote this semester. However, much of the assessment was already home-based andnd/or online, and the outbreak occurred in a less important part of the semester as far as the exam is concerned. At first, I put up slides on Blackboard and let the students know I was available via email. The last classes were then held online through Collaborate. This meant giving spoken presentations of the classes and being available for any questions, and finally reiterating the main themes of the semester in wrap-up sessions. This expansion of the online part of the course entailed cancelling classes in the Oppgaveskrivekurs that were most interactive (learning to use Endnote, and a colloquium on the essay). Instead, I uploaded tips for the exams, and let the students know that their grades would reflect the difficulty of not having a physical library. I also placed links to as many of the books and articles as possible on the pensum, since even some of the books one could read online through Oria are only available if one is on campus or has a VPN. Students seemed to appreciate me being quick in responding to their individual emails with helpful advice. There were a few indications from the emails that students were getting stressed due to the Coronavirus, uncertainty about NTNU courses and exams, but I directed students to the telephone and internet services that SiT provides (through an announcement to all students' email addresses) and also added below the slides for the last class the attached list of places one can go to overcome anxiety over coronavirus and the isolation of social distancing.

The Learning Outcomes are relevant, except that knowledge of Sikhism, Islam and Christianity in India is not very well advanced. This is because the course has to limit its focus, and does that by omitting the 12th to 18th century history of South Asia. The learning outcomes are communicated to students at the beginning of the course and then woven into the lectures as asides, stressing the importance of this or that aspect of understanding South Asian religious worlds from the perspective of learning outcomes. The learning outcomes fit very well to the more specific learning outcomes of the course RVI 2165, Buddhism in South and Central Asia, which students can take once they have completed RVI1040.

Students appreciated the opening emphasis on Orientalism and critical Postcolonial perspectives such as Masuzawa and King when coming to understand and study religions that were foreign to them. The books on the pensum were judged right, and gave a good overview of the subject. Students suggested they would prefer works in Norwegian, but there are not really any quality publications in that language,m so english was preferred. However, the pensum was updated to relegate older and harder works to "recommended reading". Students found the lectures interesting and energetic, with lively Powerpoints that outlined historical processes (such as maps, arrows marking of historical events etc.). This was helped by being able to follow the PowerPoints on their computers, because they were circulated on Blackboard before each lesson. Blackboard learning materials (again created in earlier semesters) were excellent, and were used by students to support their study. Lastly, students seemed to appreciate that the teacher was always available for answering questions and responding to emails.

The Learning Controls and examination essays were completed by the majority of the class (though less than last year though, perhaps due to Coronavirus), and mostly to a good standard. The Learning Controls were not too difficult, encouraged group work at first (thankfully before the lockdown) and then skills in referencing and general knowledge about the content of the course. Based on last year's feedback, more group work was conducted in the classes, to break up the long presentations of the teacher, and this was welcomed and led to a greater feeling of engagement among the students. Unfortunately, this feeling was almost totally destroyed by the Coronavirus outbreak, despite my best efforts. With more forethought, online learning could definitely help to mitigate this problem in the future.
