Even though this is a rather specialised course and it was being taught for the first time, the turnout was very good with over 100 students enrolled. Around 60 students attended each week and more than 80 students took the exam. The main objective of the course was twofold: on the one hand, to provide an in-depth understanding of the variations of Chinese foreign policy towards all major countries and regions, as well as general aspects of it. On the other hand, the examination in form of a term paper offered the students the opportunity to improve the important skill of academic writing. The students were asked to write on a topic of their choice within the field of China’s foreign policy. Although the writing process was not easy for some, it was a good preparation the BA thesis.The large number of students and the amount of class content did not allow for much interaction during the lecture. However, the atmosphere was open and individual students naturally asked questions or answered my questions during the lecture. In the discussions I also tried to encourage the students to make mental connections with what they were studying in other courses. The European Studies students, in particular, found that their knowledge was well complemented by the topics covered in this course on China. Students were also encouraged to actively apply what they had learned about IR theories and social science methods in other courses in the context of this course.Another skill that was trained in this class was independent literature research. In the beginning, many students struggled to find good additional literature to supplement the list of required reading. The term paper was also an excellent challenge and exercise for this. The students had the opportunity to meet with me and receive detailed feedback on the outline of their term paper before submitting it. Detailed feedback was given after the assignment upon request. The majority of the students made use of this opportunity to receive feedback.I met with the reference group three times and got excellent feedback. In addition, the (ungraded) quiz and discussion in the our final session showed that the students had learned a lot and most of them would welcome more courses on China. Several participants also expressed an interest in learning Chinese. At the moment, however, Mandarin is not offered for study at NTNU.

Det moderne Kinas fremvekst startet med reform- og åpningpolitikken på slutten av 1970-tallet. Siden den gang har landet blitt stadig mer innflytelsesrikt; i begynnelsen som en økonomisk aktør og senere også som en aktør i internasjonal politikk. I dette emnet vil vi undersøke mekanismene og prosessene i Kinas utenrikspolitikk, landets diplomatiske strategier og perspektiver i utenrikspolitikken og dets ulike utenriksrelasjoner med land i Asia, Europa, Amerika, Afrika og Midtøsten. Vi vil også studere hvordan disse landene ser på Kina, og hvordan de formulerer og implementerer deres Kina-politikk deretter. I tillegg vil vi se på Kinas (og Taiwans og Hong Kongs) rolle i internasjonale organisasjoner og regimer, som for eksempel FN og dets organisasjoner, Verdens handelsorganisasjon og internasjonale traktater. Ved å se nærmere på det fascinerende landeksemplet Kina, vil vi også utøve metoder for utenrikspolitisk analyse og studere utenrikspolitiske teorier. Begge skal utvikle studentenes ferdigheter i utenrikspolitisk analyse generelt og hjelpe dem til å analysere andre lands utenrikspolitikk på en systematisk måte.
