Generally good quality. Both students and teachers are happy about the quality. The pass rate was very high, indicating good quality of the course (as indicated by the students' reference report below): "The reference group's report on the quality of the learning activities:  The learning activities have been satisfactory in both groups. In HIST3485, the obligatory assignment (OA) on the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade provided the students a good introduction to the course material as a whole and the topic in focus especially. The AFR2850 OAs have been helpful in providing various opportunities to go in-depth into key subjects, as well as helping with gaining an overview of the subject itself.   The lectures themselves have been great. They have been interesting and educational, and they have covered a magnitude of topics, all of which have been important for the overall understanding of the history of modern Africa. The addition of supplementary links in the presentations were really helpful, and the presentations, as a whole, were very easy to follow.   The literature has been relevant and it has provided a good foundation for the students. Some students pointed out that much of the literature has been fairly new, which they saw as a positive thing seeing as Africa as a continent is in constant change. The books and articles have been varied in both focus and style, providing a well-rounded foundation for the students’ continued learning on the subject of modern African history.     Both of the exams fit well within the subject parameters given throughout the semester. They leaned heavily on the literature given, as well as providing room for individual analysis.   Measures that may enhance the learning outcomes, as proposed by the reference group:  Measures that have been mentioned:   ·       Providing a link for the movies and other videos we are supposed to watch, instead of watching them in class through zoom. It was difficult to hear sometimes, and the quality was not very good.   ·       On digital lectures: due to the lag in video and sound over zoom, it is important for the lecturer to provide enough time for a question to be answered by the students. Many students wished for more discussions on topics, but didn’t feel like there was given clear enough room for the students to be involved. This comes mostly from the fact that compared to an in-class experience, a zoom lecture will remove the clear sign of people who wish to speak. Therefore, people wait even longer to see if someone else is going to answer the question or not. Since the lecturer in this class is not used to this type of medium, he went a bit too quickly into answering the question himself, or moving on. It is difficult to have a proper discussion over zoom, and the lecturer need to understand this.   ·       They also sought that more of the questions up for discussion could have been given to the students beforehand, so that they could participate even more.    Feedback to the lecturer:  <ol><li>The LUB was up to date and relevant</li><li>It was published on BB as well as communicated directly through emails and classroom contact.</li><li>The LUB corresponded/related well with other/earlier parallel LUB</li></ol> Referansegruppens rapport:The overwhelming feedback to the lecturer is that the students were very satisfied with the course. They found the topic interesting, the literature both relevant and informative, and the OAs helpful. The lecturer was clear-spoken and knowledgeable and provided a well-rounded and in-depth introduction into the many sides of modern African history.   Many students wished us to pass on their well-wishes for the lecturer and thank him for a great semester!"

The digital classroom approach had its limitations due to the lag in video and sound over zoom.But the learning activities in were productive and satisfactoryStudents required more possibility to participate, but the digital approach was not so optimal for that purpose.It was difficult to evaluate the learning environment as students joined from different locations, with different mediums (mobile phone/tablet/laptop) often some without videoconnection.

The course was assessed through on-week take-home exams in correspondence with the set assessment form.

Faglig innhold

Emnet gir avansert oversikt over hovedtrekk i moderne afrikansk historie (Afrika sør for Sahara) i perioden fra ca. 1700 og frem til i dag. Formålet er å gi detaljert innsikt i viktige endringsprosesser i afrikanske samfunn sett i et lengre, historisk perspektiv. Viktige endringsprosesser inkluderer den transatlantiske slavehandelen, kolonitid, postkolonialisme og demokratisering. Afrika settes i en global sammenheng, og kontakt og interaksjon med omverdenen står sentralt. Både "ytre" og "indre" faktorer trekkes inn i en diskusjon av Afrikas utvikling. Emnet vil også kontekstualisere og problematisere forestillinger om Afrika som har blitt skapt siden 1700-tallet og diskutere hvordan og hvorfor disse forestillingene i mange tilfeller fremdeles eksisterer, også i Norge.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

Forelesninger og seminar. Felles undervisning med AFR2850 Moderne afrikansk historie. To seminarpresentasjoner som er obligatoriske og må godkjennes for å kunne ta eksamen. Godkjent presentasjon er gyldig i inneværende og tre påfølgende semester. Seks timers avsluttende eksamen.
