There are three primary sources of information and feedback for this course-report. The first is the meetings we have had with the reference students over the course of the semster. The reference students have on their part collected feedback from other students in the course. The second source is the report written by the reference group students and the third source of feedback is a student survey that were developed for this course. Most students express that they regard the course as an important part of their education and that the learning environment is conducive to attaining the learning outcomes. The learning outcomes were in general regarded as good and the same applies for the teaching activites and lab-based activities.

All students that answered that survey expressed that the they felt that the content and scope of the course were appropriately challenging. According to the feedback the students appreciated that the scope of the course was restricted to regression analysis.

Although most students express that they appreciate both the classroom teaching and the lab-based learning activities there is as expected more of a division between the students with regards to the classroom teaching. Most students have a favorable impression of the labs. The labs are generally more applied and therefore involve more student activity and are easier to follow because they are less theory-intensive. Some students expressed some reservations with the classroom teaching, while others had very favorable impressions of also the classroom teaching.

All of the students who answered the survey regarded the term paper format of the exam to be appropriate. Some students commented that the exam-format was aligned with the learning outcomes.

One of the feedbacks from previous semesters we have been working on is to achieve a good coordination between the classroom teaching and what is covered in the data-labs. This has been much better this semester, although some students still felt it could be strengthened even further. So we will continue to focus on improving this in the upcoming semesters. Another goal that we had for this semester was to involve students more during classes. This was accomplished by doing several practically oriented excercises and sessions with group-based discussions during classes. We aim to include even more student activities in forthcoming semesters.

The compulsory assignments must be completed and passed in order to be eligible to take the exam. The examination consists of an individual assignment and oral exam. The grade for the individual assignment may be adjusted after the oral examination.

Forkunnskapskrav

Bachelor degree or equivalent. Other relevant qualifications may be accepted by the Department of Geography.

Faglig innhold

The course gives an introduction to fundamental concepts in statistical analysis, with a focus on statistical inference, where we draw conclusions about populations from sample data. The course is practical, which means that students will be introduced to different statistical methods and sets of data that we analyze using these methods. The course introduces students to a quantitative software called R. It is an open source software with an extensive library of statistical functions. Students will get familiarized with this software through computer labs which run in parallel with the lectures. The grade from the course will be based on a written term paper and an oral exam. The term paper may be based on data that are supplied by the course administrators or students may choose to use their own data. To increase the potential value of this course, students are encouraged to make the term paper methodically and thematically relevant to their master thesis.

It is expected that compulsories and examinations must be completed in English. 

Læringsutbytte

The course gives students a theoretical as well as practical introduction to fundamental concepts of statistical analysis. Students should be able to apply this knowledge in doing a quantitative research project which they will present in the term paper.
