The course fulfills its purpose quite well, and no revisions have been thought necessary.

The students' achievement of the learning outcomes is variable. This is to a large extent unavoidable, given that the students come from a variety of different academic programmes and backgrounds, have quite variable degrees of motivation and available time, and the course is largely completed by self-study. But many students obviously gain completely new perspective on the mind, and even issues in their main field of study - this is especially case for the strong and motivated students.

As stated above, the course fulfills its purpose well.

What is the mind? What is a cognitive system? What is consciousness? How do any of these things relate to the (physical, social and technical) world? What is the relation between mind and brain? To what extent can the mind be explained or illuminated scientifically, for example by neuroscience, psychology or other fields of cognitive science? This course aims to allow students to integrate and apply knowledge they already possess from specialist fields of study to themes from contemporary philosophy of mind, thereby providing an interdisciplinary understanding of the scope and possibilities of explaining the mind in a naturalistic manner.

Emnet har en bredt sammensatt og variert studentmasse, særlig med hensyn til deres faglige bakgrunn. Dette byr på enkelte utfordringer, f.eks. når det gjelder hva slags vanskelighetsnivå deres pensum bør ligge på. Samtidig åpner emnets karakter, av veiledet egenstudium, for en høy grad av individuell tilpasning til hver enkelt students interesser og forutsetninger. De aller fleste av studentene synes å ha satt pris på den store individuelle friheten, når det kommer til problemstilling, tema, og arbeidsmåte, som emnet åpner for, og har arbeidet godt på egen hånd, med varierende grad av input fra underviser underveis. Jeg har i de innledende, individuelle samtalene med studentene ofte, etter å ha forhørt meg om deres interesser, antydet en liten meny av hovedalternativer, når det kommer til tema, pensumlitteratur, og problemstilling. Denne strukturen har fungert godt, og er noe man kunne vurdere å videreutvikle (f.eks. i form at å ha en meny av ulike, mer el mindre faste pensumlister på ulike tema, med tilknytte forslag til problemstillinger e.l.

De aller fleste studentene har arbeidet bra med emnet, og synes å ha hatt et godt utbytte av en kombinasjon av selvstendig arbeid, og veiledningssamtaler med meg. De fleste av de endelige essayene levert til eksamen holdt et godt til meget godt nivå (og et par var fremragende).

Se over angående forslag om å utvikle en meny av hovedalternativer når det kommer til tema, problemstilling, og pensumliste. Dog, disse bør fungere på en måte som åpner for individuell tilpasning, bl.a. i lys av den store variasjonen i studentenes fagbakgrunn, som nevnt over.

The quality of the course is quite good: it achieves good results in terms of learning outcome, using very little resources.

The learning outcome is up to date and relevant, but also highly individual. It is communicated to the students through the course pages (including Blackboard). The course is not part of a set degree programme, so the question about connections to parallel or earlier courses is not relevant.

The students write an essay under supervision on a subject of their choice: the topic is always chosen with a view to ensuring that the student gains familiarity with at least the basics of relevant discussions in philosophy of mind. The student's engagement is highly variable, leading to quite variable learning outcomes, but most of the students are highly motivated and learn a lot.

The course is evaluated solely on the basis of the written assignment: as long as the student is guided towards writing the essay on a topic with close (enough) connections to central themes in philosophy of mind, the connection is secured.

Kvaliteten i emnet virker å være god: både studentene og den emneansvarlige har intrykk av at studentene er engasjerte og lærer mye.

Læringsutbyttet er oppdatert og relevant, og kommuniseres til studentene via emnebeskrivelsen, kunngjørelser på Blackboard, samt personlig kommunikasjon ifm veiledning.

Studentene har ganske ulike faglige bakgrunner: dette tas høyde for når det individuelle pensumet bestemmes i starten av semesteret. Studentene får også ganske stor frihet til å velge et tema (for oppgaven) som de selv finner spesielt interessant, og som gjør det mulig for dem å trekke inn relevant kunnskap fra andre studier. Dette bidrar til at studentene genrelt finner emnet givende og engasjerende.
