The AAR4843 course is new from this semester, established as a parallel course to "AAR4225 Integrated land use and transportation planning", where some of the methods were taught earlier - up to spring semester 2020. In general it is my opinion that the course achieved a reasonably good quality, and covered most of the topics we had planned for. The quality assessment must be seen in light of the pandemic situation that affected this whole spring semester, and also that this is a rather advanced course that was taught for the first time. 20 students completed the exercise work and took the exam. A survey was distributed among the students towards the end of the semester (May 20th.), and this assessment is based upon the survey results. Out of the 20 students, 14 (70%) completed the survey. I also asked students that registered in Blackboard early but didn't complete the course what reasons they had for not completing, in search for useful information for planning the next version of the course. I received 2 responses from students that didn't complete. Both stated that the main reason for not completing was related to the pandemic. One also answered that the exercises were too difficult, and that he/she took other courses and did not have the capacity to complete this one too. In the written responses I registered these useful views (excerpts): "I started with the exercises too late. The video tutorials are great, but lab and video is best. It would probably have been different if I had to be in the lab. Two proposals: Maybe a lecture with some planner who work with these matters and uses these GIS analysis. And second: Maybe one exercise where students can explore another city of own choice. This would be motivating and inspiring towards the master thesis". My view here is that I agree with both these comments and will try to implement something accordingly. From the candidates that completed the course the survey results indicates that most of them approve of the course quality in general. There are also several observations that point out areas of improvement, but the overall responses are positive. Details follow, and are commented in the next report sections.

My view is that the learning outcome of this course is updated and relevant. Network analysis and accessibility studies have become increasingly more important as parts of the urban planning toolbox, and this course gives both the practicing planner and the planning academic a (mostly) applied approach to these topics. The course also gives a collection of methods relevant for students of "Integrated land use and transportation planning", and represent an expansion of the exercise part of that previous course. The learning outcome is communicated partly as lectures, partly as exercises with GIS tools, which are given as instruction sessions in a data lab. The student survey indicates mostly approval of how the learning outcome is communicated.

The combination of lectures/written curriculum and data lab exercises supported with instruction videos, has proved to be effective. The course has become a "learning by doing" course, in accordance with the initial goals. I have registered motivated students, and very good results, especially in the exercise part of the course. The pandemic-initiated learning environment made it necessary to go digital both in lectures and in exercise supervision, but this is a form of course where digital supervision not necessarily is a big drawback. The extensive use of recorded lectures and instruction videos received much praise from the students (see diagrams above) and contributed to good exercise results.

The students mostly report that the exam was relevant with regards to the topics of the course, and few reported that the exam was too difficult. My own opinion is that exercises and assignments in the future versions of the course should account for a larger share of the final grading.

Mer om vurdering

Øvingen teller 50% av den endelige karakteren i emnet. Det kreves bestått på både øving og eksamen for å få bestått sluttkarakter. Utsatt eksamen legges normalt til neste ordinære eksamensperiode. Både øvinger og skriftlig eksamen må være bestått for å få karakter i emnet. Karakter på øvingsarbeid kan inngå i karaktergrunnlaget ved utsatt eksamen eller gjentak, i inntil 1,5 år etter beståtte øvinger.



Forkunnskapskrav

Krav til grunnleggande kunnskap om geografiske informasjonssystem, og ferdigheiter i bruk av slik programvare. Eksamen må vere avlagt i emne som AAR4841, TBA4240, GEOG1012 eller tilsvarande. 

Faglig innhold

Kunnskap om GIS-baserte metodeverktøy som kan brukast som støtte for samordna areal- og transportplanlegging, konsentrert om nettverksmodellar og annan metodikk for å arbeide med tilgjengelegheit for ulike transportformer. Det blir særleg lagt vekt på analyser og modellar som støttar planlegging for ikkje-motoriserte transportformer og kollektivtransport.

Læringsutbytte

Kunnskap: Funksjonaliteten til nettverksmodellar og nettverksgrafar i geografiske informasjonssystem (GIS). Nettverksmodellering brukt til å støtte samordna areal- og transportplanlegging. Nettverksdatakjelder og referansesystem, kartografi og kartografiske metodar relevante for analyser av tilgjengelegheit. Datastrukturar, datamodellar og analyseteknikkar. Også kunnskap om rastermodellar brukt til transportformål ("path distance").

Ferdigheiter: Tilrettelegging av nettverksdata for ulike transportformer i eit GIS, inkludert kollektivnettverk med rutedata. Gjennomføring av nettverksbygging og nettverksanalyser. Implementering av rasteranalyse.

Generell kompetanse:  bruke tileigna kunnskap og ferdigheiter for å løyse varierte oppgåver innan tilgjengelegheitsanalyse, samordna areal- og transportplanlegging.
