Almost all international students who are going to stay in Norway for more than three months must register with UDI. This page explains how you should proceed to get your residence permit, residence card or registration certificate.

Nordic citizens 

Nordic citizens do not not need to register online or meet with the police. 

Non-EU / non-EEA citizens: Residence permit and residence card 

(EEA = European Economic Area)

If you are a non-EU/non-EEA student staying in Norway for more than three months, you need to apply for a residence permit and a residence card.

Residence permit: Before arriving in Norway (non-EU/non-EEA)

Almost all non-EU/non-EEA citizens, should be able to register an application for a student residence permit online at www.udi.no. Your application is formally registered when you submit your passport, with the relevant supporting documentation, to the appropriate embassy/consulate. Applicants who are not permitted to apply online must submit an application form to a Norwegian embassy/consulate.

Please note: NTNU does not have the possibility to act as a general reference for your application. You should not list NTNU as a reference in your application.

Residence card: After arriving in Norway (Non-EU/non-EEA)

1. If you have a residence permit: You will need to go to the police station to get a residence card (oppholdskort):
   
   1. Students in Trondheim: The Office of International Relations organizes group appointments at the start of the semester, so do not book your own. Bring your passport, which must be valid for the period you intend to stay in Norway, with you to the appointment. If you are unable to participate, you must book your own appointment. 
      1. Address: Gryta 4, 7005 Trondheim
   2. Students in Gjøvik must book their own a police appointment 
   3. Students in Ålesund must book their own police appointment 
2. If you do not have a residence permit: You must apply online and book your own police appointment at www.udi.no. You will not be able to join the group appointments in Trondheim. Bring the following to the appointment:
   1. Cover letter and receipt of payment 
   2. Letter of confirmation/letter of admission from the Office of International  Relations, NTNU
   3. Passport (must be valid for the period you intend to stay in Norway) 
   4. Confirmation of financial support
   5. Housing contract 

EU/EEA citizens: Registration certificate 

If you are an EU/EEA citizen staying in Norway for more than three months, you need to register as a part of the registration scheme for EU/EEA nationals. Students from Nordic countries do not have to register online or meet with the police. 

1. Fill out an application at www.udi.no. You should do this after arriving in Norway, but before meeting with the police.
2. Get your registration certificate at the police station.
   
   1. Students in Trondheim: The Office of International Relations organizes group appointments at the start of the semester, so do not book your own. If you are unable to participates, you can book your own appointment at the same time you fill out the online application. Please note that this process could take several weeks.
      1. Address: Gryta 4, 7005 Trondheim
   2. Students in Gjøvik must book their own a police appointment 
   3. Students in Ålesund must book their own police appointment 
3. For the appointment at the police station, please bring:
   
   1. A printout of the NTNU admission letter you received by email
   2. Passport (must be valid for the period you intend to stay in Norway)
   3. European Health Insurance Card or proof of private health insurance
