Requirements for photos used on access cards
The photo on your access card needs to be similar to a passport photo. This means:
- The background must be white or neutral
- Your face should fill 70-80 percent of the photo
- Your entire head must be visible
- Your face must be depicted directly from the front
- Your gaze must be aimed at the camera lens
- Your eyes must be open, visible, and not covered by hair
- Head coverings are not permitted, with the exception of religious head coverings
- Sunglasses are not allowed
- Normal glasses are allowed, but avoid reflections in the glass
- The photo must be sharp, in focus, and have good contrast
You will need to pay for a new access card, in the event of an obvious violation of the guidelines listed above.
F.A.Q.
Where can I find an example of a passport photo?
Where do I take the photo for my access card?
- Use NTNU's online photo booth to take a photo with your mobile phone or computer. You can also choose to upload an existing image of yourself as long as the image meets the quality requirements mentioned above.
What happens after I take the picture?
- You can pick up your admission card from the chosen delivery point after two business days. Download the Student ID app in advance and bring valid identification credentials to collect the card. Cards must be collected in person.
Is this image used for anything else?
- Yes. The same image is used for the Student ID app, but the photo will not be automatically used in other profiles. You can choose to download the image at the last step if you want to use the same image for other purposes.
Can I change my PIN without taking a new photo?
- Not yet, but this will be possible during the semester.
Why was the image flipped when I took the photo?
- This is common practice for many selfie apps. The image is mirrored only when using the camera, but normalizes as soon as you begin cropping the photo
Are student cards the same as access cards?
- Yes. Student card and access card and ID-card are synonymous at NTNU. Employee card is also used to refer to an access card at NTNU. However, the Student ID app is not the same as the ID-card / Student card.
Possible errors messages
Your account is not yet ready in this system. Try again in an hour.
- After you activate your user, your information is synchronized to the university's systems. This happens relatively quickly, but can take an hour or two at the start of the semester if there are many who activate at the same time.
That image is too large
- The max file size is 2 MB. Reduce the file size and try again.
Sorry! Saving failed (server error)
- Neither the image nor the PIN-code was saved. Notify Orakel Support Services (hjelp.ntnu.no) if you receive this error message so that the situation can be investigated. You will need to take the picture again. Please wait a few hours before your next attempt. We have a stress-tested this service, but there may be some bugs in the early days of use.
