OneNote - Math tool

This guide will teach you how to type mathematical expressions in OneNote, how to write mathematical expressions by hand, and what you can do with the expressions afterwards.

Topic page about OneNote | Pages labeled OneNote

OneNote has it's own window for working with mathematical expressions. There are two ways to find the math-window. Both under the Insert tab, and under the Draw tab you will find the Math button.

The Math window has a lot of useful functionality such as evaluating expressions, solving equations, derivation, integration and simple graphing.

How to type formulas

To type mathematical formulas into OneNote, you simply type the expression in a textbox, select the text and click the Math button (1). The written expression is then converted to a mathematical expression.

Select text and click Math

Formatting

The format used to type mathematical expressions in OneNote is similar to, but not the same as in LaTeX. Below are some examples of how to type a few common expressions:

Formatting expressions

TextFormula
(Ax+B)/((x+1)^2+1){{1_3_formel.pngMath expression}}
\sum_(n=1)^(\infty) 1/n^2{{1_4_formel.pngMath expression}}
F(s)=\int_(0)^(\infty) f(t) e^(-st) dt{{1_5_formel.pngMath expression}}
(\partial u)/(\partial t)=\alpha (\partial^2 u)/(\partial x^2){{1_6_formel.pngMath expression}}

Formatting special characters

Special characters can be inserted by typing \<code>, here are some few examples of common characters:

CodeCharacter
\alphaα
\approx
\betaβ
\cdot
\degree°
\Delta, \deltaΔ, δ
\emptyset
\gammaγ
\in
\infty
\int
\kappaκ
\Lambda, \lambdaΛ, λ
\ne
\Omega, \omegaΩ, ω
\partial
\Phi, phiΦ, ϕ
\Pi, \piΠ, π
\prod
\Psi, \psiΨ, ψ
\rhoρ
\Sigma, \sigmaΣ, σ
\sqrt
\subset, \subseteq⊂, ⊆
\sum
\tauτ
\therefore
\Theta, thetaΘ, θ
\times×

The complete specification can be found here: A Nearly Plain-Text Encoding of Mathematics (pdf), in appendix B (Character Keywords and Properties) you will find a complete list of special characters.

How to create formulas from handwriting

(To learn more about handwriting in OneNote, see OneNote - Handwriting and drawing)

You can use the drawing functionality in OneNote to write a mathematical expression by hand.

  1. Select the handdrawn expression (1) and click the Math button (2).

Select a drawing and click Math

The math window will appear on the right side.
  2. In the math window you will see a suggested formatting of the expression. Click Ink to Math (3) to format the expression.

    Click Ink to Math

Mathematical operations

When you have written a mathematical expression there are several operations you can apply to it. Available operations depends on your expression. To see the available operations:

  1. Select the expression and click the Math button to open the mathematics window.
  2. Click Select an action under the expression in the math window.

Examples of operations

  • Evaluate expression
  • Factorization
  • Graph in 2D
  • Differentiate
  • Integrate
  • Solve for x
  • Round, floor and ceiling

Example: Factorization

Example: Solve for x

Solve for x

To get the result of the operation back into the notebook you simply click and then drag it over. For certain operations OneNote can show the steps for calculation, this is dispalyed by clicking Show steps under the result. OneNote will generate a step by step explanation of how to do the calculation yourself. This explanation can also be dragged into the notebook.

Visualize simple 2D graphs

OneNote allows you to visualize simple functions with 2-dimentional graphs.

  1. After you have written your expression, click the Math button to open the math window.
  2. Select Draw in 2D (1). You should now see the graph in the math window. OneNote also has several graph features (2) you can use to show relevant points on the graph.

    Draw in 2D

This can for example be intersections, extrema, inflection points etc. (3). Additional information about some properties of the function, such as the domain and range, can be found under graph-functions. You can insert the graph into your notebook by clicking Insert on page (4).

Settings

At the bottom of the math window you will find the settings button. Here you can select the angle unit you want to use (degrees, radias, gradians). In addition, you can choose whether the equation solver should include complex solutions or only real solutions.
