Using VPN (virtual private network), you can connect to the NTNU network and access internal resources like Oria, your home directory or other NTNU network directories from home. The following is a guide to installing VPN on your personal computer.

Download VPN #
The software can be installed by all students and employees at NTNU. It's available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
Note that the program can only be used for academic work and not for commercial use.
About the program #
VPN is a tool that allows you to gain access to NTNU resources such as your home directory and Oria while at home. VPN gives you access to resources that otherwise require you to be connected to eduroam (e.g. journal databases). When you're connected to VPN you're connected to NTNUs network, and you therefore have to follow NTNUs IT regulations.
VPN functions as a safe tunnel between your machine and NTNU's system. Traffic in the VPN tunnel is encrypted, meaning that data sent through this tunnel cannot be read by others. All active students and employees at NTNU can access VPN.
Connect to VPN #
- Open the Cisco Anyconnect application.
- Enter vpn.ntnu.no in the field for server address.
- Press "Connect".
- Enter your NTNU username and password,
- Press "OK".

VPN on Android #
You can find this app in Google Play Store. The Any Connect application is free to install and use.
Known errors and solutions #
ERROR: "The VPN client agent was unable to create the interprocess communication depot." #
This error can occur if you have turned on Windows Internet Connection Sharing.
Turn off ICS: Network and Sharing Center --> Change Adapter Settings --> Right-click on adapter and choose Properties --> Sharing tab --> Uncheck Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection.
Or: Windows key + R --> write services.msc --> double-click Internet Connection Sharing --> Change Startup Type to Disabled --> Restart your computer.
ERROR: Failed to initialize subsystem connection #
Thiss error occurs on Windows 8 and 10 after an update to Internet Explorer. This is beceause Cisco AnyConnect uses settings from Internet Explorer to decide whether or not you're connected to the internet. The problem can be fixed by downloading the following hotpatch from Microsoft.
Close the VPN client and install the patch, then restart the VPN cient. If it still doesn't work, restart your computer.
Error message "Failed to initialize": #
Since february 2015 we have been getting an error message "failed to initialize" this is because of a windows update.
How to fix this:
- Close Cisco VPN (right click the icon and press Quit)
