Application form #

The application deadline is 2 May 2020 for a sabbatical leave starting the following academic year (2021-2022). Application form opens March 1, 2020.

Who can apply? #

Members of permanent staff in academic posts in the categories professor and associate professor, with the right and duty to conduct research, have the right to apply for a sabbatical leave of 1 year after 4 years of service, or a sabbatical leave of 6 months after 2 years of service. 

Employees from the old NTNU keep their accumulated years of service from before the merger. Employees from the former university colleges started their count of years of service on January 1 2016 and can now apply for a sabbatical starting in the fall term of 2020.

Older arrangements and/or individual agreements regarding sabbaticals at the former university colleges are kept until the fall term of 2020. It is not possible to combine the new arrangement with the previous arrangement to gain twice the amount of years of service from 1 January 2016 to the fall term of 2020.

What should the application include? #

  • A plan for the sabbatical of high academic quality, linked with academic priorities and NTNU’s strategic objectives.
  • An overview of results expected from the sabbatical.
  • A plan for funding, including a plan for external funding.
  • A plan for satisfactory handling of supervision and teaching duties during the sabbatical period, prepared in cooperation with the department.

How is the application evaluated? #

  • The department’s needs for academic development (research, innovation, education and dissemination).
  • Development of external (international) networks with universities and business.
  • Previous lengthy academic visits abroad.
  • Quality and feasibility of the project.
  • The researcher’s qualifications (academic production, academic supervision, project management).

Other factors that are emphasised #

  • Period of qualifying service/time since the last sabbatical
  • Strong commitment to teaching, supervision and/or intensive administrative duties.
  • Young applicants who:
    • have both their first degree and their researcher training from NTNU or another Norwegian university and who have not had a longer-term visit abroad during their education
    • need career development and networking
  • Women in the position of Associate Professor in male-dominated areas.

Application procedure #

The department approves the academic content of the sabbatical, ranks the application, and sends a prioritized list of applicants (if there are several applicants) to the faculty.

  1. The faculty makes a decision by 20 June.
  2. The dean notifies the institute of the decision.
  3. The faculty sends a letter to inform all applicants of the outcome.
  4. Those who are granted a sabbatical are sent a letter from the faculty specifying the amount granted to cover  travel, accommodation and other expenses.
  5. The applicant must then return a signed agreement to the faculty.
  6. Successful applicants can apply to the faculty for changes in the date, location, or other aspects of the sabbatical.
  7. The faculty informs applicants of the outcome of the proceedings.
  8. All staff who take a sabbatical leave must submit a final report to the faculty after the end of the sabbatical.
  9. If your application is rejected, you can ask for your application to be re-evaluated. The re-evaluation is done at faculty level.

Rights and obligations #

  • The researcher has leave of absence with full pay during the sabbatical and is exempt from teaching duties, the obligation to report to the workplace, and clinical and administrative duties.
  • In cooperation with the department, the researcher must ensure that supervision of doctoral candidates is taken care of during the sabbatical period.
  • Tasks other than those included in the project plan for the sabbatical may not be imposed on or undertaken by the researcher unless this has been approved by the manager.
  • The sabbatical period is usually spent at an external institution. Flexible solutions, including commuting, can be arranged if there are academic or family reasons for this.
