The Gemini centre is a model for strategic interaction between parallel professions at NTNU, SINTEF, the University of Oslo, St. Olav’s Hospital and NTNU Social Research.

Gemini cooperation
The aim is to build larger and more robust academic environments with higher quality that will be better able to seize and develop new opportunities. Through this, the partners will increase the competitiveness and value creation of the community.
In the international arena, good academic environments are demanded, both from contractors and students. It is the best environments that wins the increasingly tougher international competition. Therefore, the Gemini centres work in line with the vision:
International outstanding together
The Gemini model requires a planned and actively maintained collaboration between otherwise independent devices. The foundation are a willingness to cooperate and mutual understanding and respect for each other's roles and distinctiveness. The cooperation shall be characterized by equality, inclusive behavior and fair resource allocation. The concept was established by NTNU and SINTEF in 2003. The University of Oslo joined in 2004 and St. Olavs Hospital in 2007. The revised cooperation agreement was decided by NTNU and SINTEF in September 2017 and is valid from 2018.
It was an important point in NIFU's evaluation that the strategic anchoring of Gemini centres has been good enough. The centres must be considered strategic initiatives and followed up accordingly. This is embedded in the revised Gemini model.

How to proceed to search
The Gemini centre is a collaborative arena for building larger and more powerful academic environments. The motive may be to create a platform for applying for SFF / SFI / FME status, EU projects or addressing major societal challenges. The cooperation may also have research councils or joint interaction with industry and the public sector as a purpose. A third motive may be to open new opportunities in the longer term, where the results are not immediately obvious. A Gemini centre may be unidisciplinary, between parallel research groups or multidisciplinary.
It must be stated clearly in the application why you want to establish the centre and what the partnership will do to achieve its goals.
The Gemini centre should be well integrated in the partners strategies. The line management must sign the application and have a special responsibility to strategically establish the centre. The application must also be approved at the Dean / Director level. The application is addressed to the management at NTNU / UiO / SINTEF / St. Olav. Applications are open twice a year. The appointment will take place during the SINTEF Council dinner in April and November.
There are two deadlines for new applications annually
- Spring
- Autumn 15. October 2022
The Gemini centre is appointed for four years. After that time, re-appointment can be requested for four new years.

Transitional arrangement
Gemini centre, which has already been appointed, completes its period before new application is expected. However, the annual report must follow revised templates and deadlines, including that the sender of the report is the centre's board.
Economy
A Gemini centre receives up to NOK 100,000 each year for cover of direct costs. The money is granted by the parent institutions and is managed by the individual centre's management.
The centre management should be able to use strategic resources for the performance of the function. This applies to both hours and other resources. This must be agreed with the line management in each case.
Annual report
All Gemini centres shall prepare an annual report. The report will primarily describe progress in relation to the centre's goals and milestones, as well as revision of the strategic plan. The report will be sent to the Gemini centres coordinator in addition to its own line management by the end of January. The sender of the annual report shall be the Gemini centre board.

Board and coordinator
Gemini cooperation is led by a board of representatives from NTNU, SINTEF and UiO. The board has overall responsibility for managing and further developing Gemini cooperation. The coordinator has the daily responsibility to follow up the centres.
