What is my responsibility as a village supervisor? #

Your responsibility as a village supervisor is to support the students in an EiT village, so that they can develop teamwork skills, and practice communicating and applying their academic expertise.

This requires you to plan and go through with the village days in cooperation with the learning assistants, and to ensure that you use EiT’s experience-based teaching method.

The village supervisor has to work both in the autumn semester (preparation) and in the spring semester (during the actual village days).


What are my tasks as a village supervisor? #

  • familiarize yourself with the course description (pdf)
  • develop a village theme and a web presentation that attracts students from across disciplines (see how to create a web presentation below)
  • participate in courses and seminars that help develop you as a village supervisor (see table below)
  • establish and coordinate cooperation with the working life
  • familiarize yourself with the attendance rules for the students, and take attendance (see attendance rules on the web site for students)
  • plan and go through with the village days in cooperation with the learning assistants
  • be a discussion partner for the learning assistants in their effort in facilitating the group processes
  • lead and be present in the village, arrange for and guide the student groups
  • inform the students about the learning material (see overview at the web site for students)
  • provide feedback on submitted work during the semester / intensive period
  • support the implementation of the student survey
  • conduct oral presentations for projects, as well as dialogues about the teamwork
  • hold reference group meetings, and ensure that a form is completed (EiT reference group report) (see procedure below)
  • write a course report and distribute it to current students enrolled in the course, the Head of Department, the Head of EiT and the Head(s) of the Study Programme (see procedure below)

In sum, the village supervisor's most important task is to support the students in an EiT village, so that they can develop teamwork skills, and practice communicating and applying their academic expertise.

What is the estimated workload? #

The total workload is 240 hours. Village supervisors spend approximately 80 hours on preparation in the autumn, and approximately 160 hours with the village and grading students in spring.

What is contained in the web description of the village? #

Each village is presented on the Experts in Teamwork web page in the autumn semester. This presentation is what helps the students choose their village.

The web presentation is consequently one of the most important tools in recruiting students to the village, and it is your responsibility as village supervisor.

How do I proceed? #

You have to fill out a template for the web presentation of your village (.docx). You then send this document to your EiT contact person at your faculty, who ensures that it is published online (see contact details here). Deadline for submission of the presentation to the faculty contact person is 1 September.

The web presentations are published 1 October, and the students’ deadline to decide which villages they want to join is 1 November.

Filling out the template

The template has been created to standardize the process of writing and publishing the web presentations. The reasons for this are that a standard template makes it easier for the students to compare villages, and to streamline the publishing process.

Creating a village title

The title is important! The first thing that students see is a list of all the titles (approximately 80). Clicking on the titles opens a new page with the information about the village. So if you don't have an interesting title, students may not even open your presentation at all.

One of the aims in EiT is that students should have the experience of working with students from other disciplines. That means your village title needs to be attractive to students from a number of academic disciplines, and should be free of specialized terminology. The village title should also be short, and invite students to read more about your village.

A brief introduction of about 100 words

Underneath the village title, you have about 100 words to describe the theme for the project work in the village. This text is intended to give the student a brief overview of the possibilities offered by the village, so that they can see how they could put their own academic expertise to work. To attract a lot of students, you probably want to explain why or how your village is interdisiplinary.

Relevant expertise

Interdisciplinarity is extremely important, so you should state clearly what kind of interdisciplinarity is relevant to your village. By being specific and describing relevant disciplines and skills, you are more likely to reach your target audience. Don't lose sight of the fact that interdisciplinarity is the goal, however. Ultimately, the students themselves have to create their own projects, based on the expertise found in the team, and the limits set by the village theme.

Additional information about the village

This is the place where you can provide more information about the village, for those who might want to apply to it:

  • More background information about the village and the village theme
  • Potential external partners from business, research groups, conferences, links to web pages or other sources of information that may add information about the theme.
  • Opportunities to work on exciting projects
  • Expectations of the students in the village
  • Examples of research questions the student groups may use as a starting point

Using images

Your presentation will be better if you have good images. If you have an image you would like to include in your presentation, send it to your faculty contact person. You can also specify in the template you fill out where you would like the image to be placed (e.g. “I would like my image to be placed underneath the introduction”).

Keep in mind permissions and rights regarding images, and that the photographer must be given credit.

Theory seminar #

The theory seminar is a preparation for the spring semester where we take the basis for the part of EiT that deals with the group process, with relevant concepts in group dynamics and facilitation as an educational method. We look at how you as a facilitator team (Village leaders and teaching assistants) can facilitate the students through EiT to gain an understanding of and skills in interdisciplinary cooperation. The seminar includes both lecture and discussion and focuses specifically on the skills described in the learning outcomes description for EiT:

  • The student can reflect on how they communicate, plan, decide, solve tasks, handle disagreements and relate to professional, social and personal challenges.
  • The student can provide feedback to others in the group in constructive ways, and reflect on feedback from the group.
  • The student can take action that stimulates cooperation, and may change interaction patterns if necessary.

The two-day seminar for village supervisors and learning assistants #

Seminar aims:

  • Become coordinated as facilitation team (village supervisor and learning assistants)
  • Develop skills to work with, and in, groups
  • Gain increased insight in the learning aims of EiT
  • Learn from each other through exchange of experience

The two-day seminar is obligatory, and a contribution to you as a village supervisor in planning for the course. This is where you both meet and get to know your two learning assistants, who are your closest assistants in the village. You also get to know other village supervisors, both inexperienced ones, as well as those who have experience from previous years. These could turn out to be important colleagues to turn to for support. The content and form of the seminar will also help you in further specific course planning and how to start the course.

Organization of the teaching staff

A village supervisor and two learning assistants make up a unit called a facilitation team. They plan and lead a village together. Three facilitation teams make a cluster. A teaching assistant from the EiT Section is attached to two clusters. Both the facilitation teams and the clusters are established during the two-day seminar.

Activities during the seminar

The seminar alternates between exercises and discussions in the clusters, as well as containing presentations and summaries by the seminar leader. This exchange of experience forms the basis for reflection and learning on the seminar, and makes out an important part of the preparations for EiT.

The participants get to know each other through exercises and tasks that are relevant to the work that is carried out in the villages.

The teaching assistants observe and give input on the interaction in the clusters. Their most important task is to mobilize the resources in the cluster. The intention is that the village supervisors and learning assistants become more conscious about the teaching methods they will use on the student groups in their own village.

The Two-day seminar is based on the Theory seminar.


Reference group and reference group meeting #

In all villages, feedback must be obtained from the students through reference groups, according to NTNU’s system for quality assurance of education.

The village supervisor is responsible for creating a reference group in the village. A representative for each student team and the village supervisor must participate. In addition, the learning assistants, the teaching assistant, a representative from the department/faculty and a representative from the EiT Section are invited to participate.

The reference group must submit proposals for measures to improve students’ learning outcomes in EiT.

At least one reference group meeting must be held during the semester or intensive period. After the reference group meeting, the village supervisor is responsible for ensuring that a form is completed (EiT reference group report), which everybody signs.

Evaluation of the course (village) and writing a course report #

As course coordinator you should evaluate your course (village) and your evaluations should be presented in a course report. The report should be sent to current students enrolled in the course, the Head of Department, the Head of EiT and the Head(s) of the Study Programme.

Remember that the course evaluation should include a student evaluation. In EiT student evaluation is conducted by reference groups, which means that the entire reference group report should be included in the course report or it could be an attachment to the course report.
