Agreements for Publishing Open Access

NTNU has made agreements with publishers for publishing Open Access. Some agreements give discount on the APC (Article Processing Charges), while other agreements cover the total APC.

The agreements #

Elsevier #

The agreement covers the APC (Article Publishing Charge) for researchers from NTNU and St. Olavs Hospital. The agreement is a 2 year-agreement (2019-2020) and covers articles submitted in 2019 and 2020. 

  • The APC cost is covered in its entirety by NTNU. Open publication does not entail extra costs for the researcher.Corresponding author must be affiliated with NTNU or St. Olavs Hospital.
  • It is important to register correct NTNU or St. Olavs Hospital affiliation as early as possible in the process. See presentation about Elsevier's author journey
  • The articles are published with CC-license, and Elsevier uses CC BY and CC BY-NC-ND. Read more about the licenses on Elsevier's website.
  • The agreement covers Publishing peer-reviewed articles. See complete title list (opens excel-file). 
  • Approximately 500 journals (opens excel-file) do not give the opportunity to publish Open Access. This is mostly journals owned by academic societies and the titles from Cell Press and Lancet.
  • Elsevier will contact authors that has published articles in an approved journal in 2019 and offer you the opportunity to make the article Open Access – at no cost to you.If the author has paid an APC for an article published in one of these journals after 1 January 2019, you will get the APC refunded from Elsevier.

Wiley #

The agreement covers the APC (Article Publication Charge) for researchers from NTNU and St. Olavs Hospital. The agreement is a 3 year-agreement (2019-2021) and cover articles that are published after 1 April 2019.

  • The APC cost is covered in its entirety by NTNU. Open publication does not entail extra costs for the researcher.Corresponding author must be affiliated with NTNU or St. Olavs Hospital.
  • It is important to register correct NTNU or St. Olavs Hospital affiliation as early as possible in the process.
  • Open publishing is selected after the article is accepted. This is done through the author's Author Services account at Wiley. Link to video about Wiley's author journey. 
  • Applies to the publication of peer-reviewed research articles in both subscription journals and Open Access journals. See an overview of all Wiley's titles for Open Access publishing.
  • Articles are published with a CC-BY licens.


IoP (Institute of Physics) #

The agreement covers the APC (Article Publishing Charge) for researchers from NTNU. The agreement is a 3 year-agreement (2017-2019). More information about the agreement at IoP’s webpages.

  • NTNU will cover the APC, so the author will not be paying for publishing Open Access. In addition, publishing in a pure OA journal can be covered by NTNU’s publication fund after an application from the author.
  • Corresponding author must be affiliated with NTNU.
  • You will have the opportunity to choose Open Access in the submission process (see IoP's workflow for Open Access)
  • All subscription journals that offer Open Access publishing from IoP and some of their partners are covered by this agreement.
  • IoP will identify articles that should be covered by this agreement. During the peer-review process, IoP will notify the author of the possibility to publish open access.
  • Articles will be published with the license CC BY 4.0. 


MDPI #

The agreement give researchers affiliated with NTNU discount on the APC (article processing charge)  in MDPI journals.

  • 10 % discount on APC.
  • Corresponding author must be affiliated with NTNU
  • Publishing costs related to a MDPI-journal can be covered by NTNU’s publication fund after an application from the author.
  • NTNU affiliation is decided by IP addresses. Author must be on NTNU’s network when you submit the article.


Open Library of Humanities (OLH) #

The agreement is a membership and collectively funded OA agreement. The agreement was made in 2017 and are reviewed every year.


SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for OA Publishing in Particle Physics) #

The agreement has existed since 2014. It is a collectively funded agreement.
