Agreements for Publishing Open Access

One action described in the national goals and guidelines for open access to research articles, is that institutions and consortia that negotiate agreements with publishers shall ensure that agreements promote open access without an increase in costs.

The agreements #

NTNU has made agreements with publishers for publishing Open Access. Some agreements give discount on the APC (Article Processing Charges), while other agreements cover the total APC.

All agreements where NTNU is paying the APC are based on:

  • Corresponding author must be affiliated with NTNU or St. Olavs Hospital. It is important that you register the correct affiliation as early as possible so you do not end up in several rounds with the publisher or even end up with an invoice to you personally.

Elsevier #

The agreement cover the APC (Article Publishing Charge) for researchers from NTNU and St. Olavs Hospital. The agreement is a 2 year-agreement (2019-2020). Detailed information on the agreement will be present on Elsevier’s webpages soon.

  • Publishing peer-reviewed articles in approximately 1,630 subscription journals (hybrid) and approximately 195 pure Open Access journals (the link open an Excel-file) is covered by the agreement.
  • Approximately 410 journals do not give the opportunity to publish Open Access (the link open an Excel-file). This is mostly journals owned by academic societies and the titles from Cell Press and Lancet.
  • You chose journal and submit the article in the same way you are used to. You will be given the opportunity to select Open Access after the article is accepted.
  • NTNU will cover the APC, so the author will not be paying for publishing Open Access.
  • Articles will be published either with the license CC BY or with CC BY-NC-ND. If the author choses CC BY-NC-ND, the author gives the commercial rights to the research to Elsevier (according to the author agreement that you sign).

Elsevier will contact authors that has published articles in an approved journal in 2019 and give you the opportunity to make the article Open Access – at no cost to you. If the author has paid an APC for an article published in one of these journals after 1 January 2019, you will get the APC refunded from Elsevier.

IoP (Institute of Physics) #

The agreement cover the APC (Article Publishing Charge) for researchers from NTNU. The agreement is a 3 year-agreement (2017-2019). Detailed information on the agreement is present on IoP’s webpages.

  • All subscription journals that offer Open Access publishing from IoP and some of their partners are covered by this agreement.
  • NTNU will cover the APC, so the author will not be paying for publishing Open Access. In addition, publishing in a pure OA journal can be covered by NTNU’s publication fund after an application from the author.
  • IoP will identify articles that should be covered by this agreement. During the peer-review process, IoP will notify the author of the possibility to publish open access.
  • Articles will be published with the license CC BY 4.0

MDPI #

The agreement give researchers affiliated with NTNU discount on the APC in MDPI journals.

  • 10 % discount on APCs (article processing charge)
  • Publishing costs related to a MDPI-journal can be covered by NTNU’s publication fund after an application from the author.
  • NTNU affiliation is decided by IP addresses. Author must be on NTNU’s network when you submit the article.

Open Library of Humanities (OLH) #

This is a collectively funded OA agreement.  The agreement is a membership and collectively funded OA (that is many libraries around the world getting together to finance costs of OLH). The agreement was made in 2017 and are reviewed every year.

SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for OA Publishing in Particle Physics) #

The agreement has existed since 2014. It is a collectively funded agreement.

Wiley #

The agreement cover the APC (Article Publication Charge) for researchers from NTNU and St. Olavs Hospital. The agreement is a 3 year-agreement (2019-2021). Detailed information on the agreement is present on Wiley’s webpages.

  • The agreement cover publishing peer-reviewed articles in approximately 1,430 subscription journals (hybrid) that offers “OnlineOpen” (the link open an Excel-file) and approximately 110 pure Open Access journals.
  • You chose journal and submit the article in the same way you are used to. You will be given the opportunity to select Open Access after the article is accepted. This is done in your “Author Services”-account at Wiley (link will also be present in the email confirming that your article is accepted for publication).
  • NTNU will cover the APC, so the author will not be paying for publishing Open Access.
  • The articles will be published with the license CC BY.

In the year 2019, the agreement cover articles that are published after 1 April in pure OA journals and 1 May in hybrid journals.
