(If there are multiple lecturers involved, please give their names.)Irina Oleinikova, Hans Kristian Høidalen, guest lecturer from SIEMENS and ABB. Any other pedagogical teaching/learning methods used?The research-based teaching method implemented in this course, where goal is to help the students understand power system protection and control and grasp the skills more deeply. The contents are adapted from recently implemented research projects. How many, if any, guest lectures were included? (Lectures from Industry/invited from other Universities, etc.) Guest lecturers:-       Leif Egil Dahl, SIEMENS, lecture on the substation design, Digital substation, IEC61850 and GOOSE.-       Zoran Gajic, ABB, lecture on the Generation Protection, sharing ABB practices for this topic. All lecturers have long-term practical experience working on the practical problems and solutions.

Knowledge: After completing this course the candidate shall understand the following items: - Identify the challenges and solutions to industrial power system control &amp; protection problems. - Select the appropriate protection schemes for various applications. - Analyse power system faults for balanced and unbalanced conditions. - Gain knowledge about signal processing techniques needed for power system protection. - Describe current and voltage transformers and their impact on protection scheme performance. - Identify, apply, and calculate settings for overcurrent, directional overcurrent, distance, differential and pilot protection schemes. - Identify, apply, and calculate settings for power lines, transformer, generator and bus bar protection schemes. - Understand the main functions of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Energy management System (EMS) and Phasor management Units (PMU) implementation. - Identify and apply wide-area monitoring and control (and protection) schemes.Skills: After completing this course the candidate should be able to: - Investigate current and voltage transformers and its impact on protection principles. - Perform power system analysis subject to symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults. - Connect secondary current and voltage circuits of relay protections. - Select proper sets of relays and to measure characteristics of protection. - Calculate relay settings and test this in different operating conditions.- Read and analyze PMU measurements. The student will also have increased his/hers abilities to: - Work independently and in groups, - Use instruments and equipment in the laboratory. - Be conscious about responsibility for own work and ability to perform teamwork rules.

Quality of the course, as self-evaluated by the lecturer of the course: (Also based on any feedback received from the students either formally or informally.) I have updated the course content according to new (EU) practices in Digital power System protection and control. I received positive feedback from students regarding Guest lecture involvement to the course content, that the content helps the student to understand best practices in this field.  The sequence of lectures/video lectures was better this year (according to the Student assistance questionnaire). The course responsible had to reconfigure course content (including two lab exercises) to the new – 100% digital working environment in the mid-March. Therefore, the differential protection and signal processing parts suffered (only virtual part were possible). These parts should be improved next year. Due to the format change, the mini-project content and work description came late in the process. Hand out the project description to the students earlier and consider using a different tool. From the end of March, video recording of the lectures was prepared to support students’ self-studies.  Action plan. Proposed changes, if any, for realization in a possible next edition of the course. Please also include if you would continue with the same assessment form or consider any other additional assessment form? -       Grading based on individual Works is a good experience for this course, and a new experience for students. The challenge is to find the correct workload and properly identify the expectations (incl. assessment criteria) so that students know how much time to spend. -       For the group of more than 20 students two Teacher Assistants must be integrated in the course. -       It would be important to provide students with additional Power Factory classes with special attention to power system protection calculation. -       We have received feedback on the lack of the pre-lab hours that could help the students to understand deeply their practical/calculation work and better prepare to the Lab experiments.  -       It is important to continue upgrade the Lab equipment and increase number of working places.

Information on the assessment methods used: The course provides the students with unique opportunity to combine theory and practice with in-depth exploration of the digitalization of power systems. The laboratory part provides the students with up-to date methodology and technology possibilities. The course was taught for the first time in 2018 and there are certainly room for improvements still. In 2021, lectures were organized using the digital capabilities of ZOOM. All recorded lectures are available on BB. We tried to organize laboratory work in a digital environment with remote connection to the stands, but this led to the problem of understanding the problem and low reaction from the students, so we returned to the physical meetings.In 2021, the final evaluation was based on a simplified individual task of a mini-project due to the situation with the crown. It measures the protection characteristics and also reads and analyses the operating conditions of the power system. There was no final exam on the course. Also, attendance and submission of 2 practical in-class exercises and 5 practical laboratory exercises with pre-lab deliverables are included as a must have to enter the mini-project phase. Traditional excursion organisation to the PS object was cancelled due to the recommendation from Trondheim municipality. The feedbacks from the students and Reference group regular meeting was an important input for bidirectional communication with student and involved teaching personnel.  Student knowledge evaluation was based on individual tasks consisted of 2 parts: i) theoretical questions on the research area of network protection and control, ii) individual calculation exercises, as a mini course projects preparation. There special attention is focused on actual research problem/tasks formulation from national/international studies conducted by lecturer and guest lecturers from SIEMENS and ABB. All selected topics were well discussed by course teachers during the semester. Mini-project selection seminar and regular consultation hours were organized during the preparation process. As well as Q6A session was offered during mini-project development to help students with problem understanding.The final grading gauged based on the following criteria:<ul><li>Theoretical basis and problem specification: this include the student’s understanding of the problem and/or research area.</li><li>Analysis/understanding: the student should demonstrate her/his ability to critically analysis of the given task and reflect good understanding on proposed solutions and theoretical basis.</li><li>Task Evaluation: Perform given electrical network analysis. Calculate system parameters and settings. Consistent information flow in the report.</li></ul> Important to note:  It is important to limit the enrolment for this course. Course programme and amount of working stations are not designed for 40 and more students.

Faglig innhold

Emnets hovedmål er å gi en avansert kunnskap om prinsipper og konsepter for relevern av kraftlinjer, transformatorer, samleskinner, generatorer og annet utstyr, og introduserer grunnlaget for overvåking og kontroll i kraftsystemet lokalt og regionalt (SCADA, EMS, wide-area monitoring and control). Det gir også en introduksjon til kommunikasjon i digitale stasjoner og driftssentraler (IEC 61850).
Emnet gir inngående innføring i relevern og beregning av innstillingene for dette. Det går også inn på feil i kraftsystemer og strøm- og spenningstransformatorer.
I emnet vil studentene bruke laboratoriene til å lære mer om forskjellige applikasjoner for vern i kraftnett gjennom bruk av kommersielt tilgjengelig relevern. Det vil gi ferdigheter i beregning av innstilling og testing av vernet for de driftsbetingelser som vernet skal operere under.

In 2020 the grading/assessment was based on the individual mini-project due to the corona situation. This measure characteristics of protection and read &amp; analyze the PMU data. There was no final exam in the course.Also, attendance and submission of 2 practical in-class exercises and 6 practical laboratory exercises with pre-lab deliverables are included as a must have to enter the mini-project phase. An excursion to the Vestbien substation was also organized and supported by Tronderenergi and SIEMENS. This way of organizing the course, let to a tremendous effort invested by the students. The students worked very hard during the semester. The feedback from the students (trough Reference group regular meeting) was that they learned a lot about the operation of the power system in this course.
