Does not apply. No development plan was made for the course MT8309 in 2019. A development plan to improve the lecture according to the input from the reference group is outlined below.

The lecture was given by Prof. Dennis Meier and Prof. Kjell Wiik. In total, 10 students participated in the course MT8309, which is a much larger number of participants than in 2019 (4 students). All students fulfilled the assignment and passed the oral exam, which was conducted in person (i.e., not online). The course included two introductory lectures, which provided the students from different study backgrounds with a general knowledge about the topic, basic definitions, and an overview of the current research questions that are addressed within the field. In particular, the students got an introduction and overview concerning the modern research on functional (ferroic) materials, covering all fields from advanced synthesis/processing to characterization and applications. The current understanding of this class of materials was discussed, as well as open questions and possible future research directions. The lectures successfully provided the basic knowledge that is required to follow scientific publications that are published in the field as reflected by several discussions with the students. Based on the introductory lectures, the students were able to make an informed choice of a topic that they would like to study in more detail and, after an extended literature research, also present to the group. This way, the students learnt to familiarize themselves with complex and ongoing vibrant research topics, entering new fields that they did not know much about before. The participants learnt to give oral presentations about state-of-the-art research topics, transforming the challenging scientific papers they read into their own language, and communicate the content to other students. Reading and understanding the literature written by specialists in the different fields was challenging for the students. The most difficult part for them was to get a general overview and, then, make a selection of topics from the much wider field that they could present in their talks. However, with support and intermediate discussions with the lecturers, the students managed this challenging task very well, got very engaged, and gave excellent presentations organized in a framework similar to a real scientific conference. Overall, the students did a very good job, were active and reached the targeted learning outcome.

The schedule for student presentations will be agreed on and fixed already during the first to introductory lectures to allow the student to plan more in advance. Furthermore, we will try to have a less compact schedule so that the students can focus better on the individual talks and also have more time for questions.
