That was the first time the Immersive Technology course was given in the Master Program in Simulation and Visualization.The strategy used was defined based on the pedagogical plan proposed for the Computer Graphics II course (previous course). It consisted of a research-based course, which integrates theory and practical activities related to immersive experiences.Students were guided based on learning basic concepts related to the topic and engaging in implementation tasks defined according to research activities conducted in the context of the NorDark Project. Invited guests contributed to the course by means of the definition of requirements, practices, and guidance for the main project (Assignment 3) developed by students.They provided insights related to a more-than-human perspective for the design of immersive experiences.

The assessment was based on a portfolio with answers to theoretical exercises and practical implementation of immersive experiences in Unity. The overall engagement and performance of students were outstanding. Most of them finished the course mastering the most important theoretical and practical concepts related to the topic.

The course, in general, contributed to the a practical skillset in computer graphics. Students learnt basics of graphics pipeline, shaders, lighting, shadows, and more, through practical implementation via low level WebGL based libraries as well as high level tools like Unity.

The course was connected to concepts learned in Computer Graphics I. The learning curve amounted to firstly, learning via WebGL based implementation of basic concepts pertaining to computer graphics, and then using higher level tools (state of the art) to deliver a final project (group participation), addressing a large problem using state of the art methods/models. The overall learning was achieved through 3 mandatory assignments and final project.

The learning activities included lectures, exercises, group discussions and mandatory assignments (including final project). The concepts were taught and discussed during lectures. Moreover, several simple exercises were carried out to make the learning more practical and interactive. The mandatory assignments were designed to deliver learning progression, i.e. to build graphical scenes of increasing complexity.Student participation during the entire course was highly proactive and convivial.

The students were graded based on a portfolio assessment which comprised of mandatory assignment submissions and the final project.
