The housing design (AAR4510) and urban design (AAR4605) studios, and the integrated knowledge courses (AAR4814 and AAR4919) were taught together as a joint studio for the first time. This strategy has been beneficial for students and teaching staff (cf. Reference Group Report). Compared to the traditional housing and urban design studios, that isolate the urban design and architectural disciplines and practices, the joint studio required interdisciplinary responses. Students were required to study one of seven neighbourhoods in Oslo and develop proposals for their regeneration and densification with new housing. The studio required students to develop coherent strategies across a range of scales - city-wide, neighbourhood, building and the individual home - and to develop the associated skills and means of representation to be able to design and communicate this complex project. The different neighborhood sites each represented a different paradigm in the urban development of Oslo. Students were able to select their neighbourhood and to develop their own design focus under the given theme. This proved to deepen their individual field of interests, foster independent thinking and creativity. In addition, the varying design focuses and proposals provided the students with an understanding of a broad range of contemporary challenges on architecture, urbanism and housing. Yet in return, this demanded more engagement and work from the students as well as extra guidance from the teachers. Due to the extended assignments, including urban plan, buildings and dwelling, the students had to work hard to elaborate their design proposals in detail on all scales (from 1:20 000 to 1:20). The final submissions demonstrated that the whole student group had acquired the knowledge and design skill to undertake this demanding and broad-ranging task with many projects achieving a very high level of competency.

All students achieved a pass and demonstrated a high level of engagement with the topic. Collectively, the student group demonstrated an awareness and understanding of a broad range of topics that are highly relevant to topics of Urban Design and Housing at an advanced level and the intended learning outcomes for the courses. This was demonstrated through their design work and associated knowledge course submissions. Over the course of the semester a frequent and informal dialogue was held with the reference group and all students. The intention was to allow feedback on the new joint courses to inform and make adjustments to the future course planning. This intense dialogue between the student and teachers is referred to in the Reference Group Report. The students felt that their opinions were taken seriously and this created a positive learning environment (cf. Reference Group Report). The students also felt that changes led to immediate or gradual improvements across the semester. At the commencement of the course, a presentation was held that provided all students with an overview of the course, the timetable, access to the course calendar, project descriptions and assignments. However, the reference group felt that expectations regarding workload in relationship to the tasks remained unclear. We responded to this and took appropriate action in dialogue with the reference group members. This is acknowledge in the reference group report. Unfortunately some invited knowledge course lectures had to be rescheduled or cancelled due to illness. The students correctly felt that some of the lectures were delivered too late.

Faglig innhold

I emnet "Urban Lab" ønsker vi å undersøke kompleksiteten i de ulike temaene som en finner integrert i dagens praksis innen byforming og urban design. Emnet undersøker også viktige praktiske og teoretiske spørsmål og problemstillinger som gjør seg gjeldende i skjæringspunktet mellom arkitektur og byforming både i et historisk og moderne perspektiv. Emnet fokuserer på undersøkelsen av viktige byformingstemaer, slik som transformasjon, post industrielle byer og urbane landskap. Det spesifikke temaet vil bli definert av oppgaven og lokasjonen i det tilknyttede emnet "Byforming og arkitektur 2", AAR4605. Det overordnede målet for emnets undersøkelser er å bidra til å opprettholde de aspektene som bidrar til å gjøre byen levelig, vakker og klar for fremtiden.

I sammenheng med AAR4605 er emnet strukturert i to parallelle faser. I første fase utforskes utvalgte referanseprosjekter innen masterplaner, byformingsprosjekter og typologier. I andre fase vil hver student lese en sentral bok innen urbanisme, reflektere over dens påvirkning på arkitekturfaget og byen, og skrive et kort essay med de viktigeste funnene. Forelesninger, literatur og referanseprosjekter vil tilby et bredt perspektiv på urbanisme og berike diskusjonene og arbeidet i emnet.

All candidates were highly engaged in both the urban design and architecture studio (AAR4605) and integrated urban lab (AAR4919). Most achieved the learning outcomes very well, resulting in relatively good grades. The students, external censors and teachers were very pleased about the high level of the intermediate and final results, especially for AAR4605. Grades AAR4605 (19 candidates) 5 A, 6 B, 7C, 1E Grades AAR4919 (19 candidates, one forgot to register for the exam, and one has to repeat it) 8 B, 6 C, 3 D Special: The integrated studio and lab was invited to make a contribution to the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale “How will we live together?”.  Our guiding theme “Time, Space, Existence” was profoundly explored and elaborated in both courses. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation and changing travel restrictions, we had to decide before Eastern that traveling to Venice for our exhibition installation and the opening of the Biennale was not feasible. Hence, after extensive discussions with all students, we changed to plan B. This was a big and sad shift for both students and teachers, but in a collaborative and experimental spirit we managed to make it successful.

The specific themes, learning objectives, teaching activities and time plan were presented to the students in the announcement of the courses on November 6th 2021 as well as in more detail in the introductions at the semester start. The integrated course was very popular among the students, but unfortunately, the two exchange students hadn’t received the link to the announcement. Specific learning outcomes were communicated to and discussed with the students thoroughly throughout the semester: particularly, - in each assignment through instructions, supervisions and reviews with invited guests; - in the lecture series; - in exam preparations; as well as - in the final review (AAR4605) and exam (AAR4919). Overall, the learning outcomes for both courses were consistent with previous courses. AAR4605In the conventional studio, we usually prepare one to around five sites, where the individual students develop different urban design and architecture proposals. Special in the Biennale Studio was that we asked the students to explore several urban transformation and infill sites in Trondheim and/or Oslo, and to develop their own design focus under the given theme. This proved to deepen their individual field of interests, foster independent thinking and creativity, and prepare the students well for their final master thesis project.In addition, the varying design focuses and proposals provided the students with an understanding of a broad range of urban and architectural challenges. Yet in return, this demanded more engagement and work from the students as well as extra guidance from the teachers. Due to the extended assignments, including city – building – room and installation, it was challenging for the students to elaborate their design proposals in detail on all scales (1:20000, 1:500 to 1:20) - particularly on the urban scale, which could have been emphasized more.

The learning and teaching activities as well as their assessments in regular feedback loops led to the aspired learning outcomes. In general, the class was hard working, highly motivated and collaborative with their colleagues. All students showed a high learning progress. Digital/ hybrid/ physicalAccording to the changing corona measures, we constantly adapted the courses to varying degrees of of digital, physical and hybrid teaching and learning modes. Using among others miroboard both as a shared class and individual group tool for sketching, supervisions, documentation and exhibition, proved to be valuable, particularly for the students learning progress and the advancement of their design projects.

The learning outcomes of the AAR4605 were assessed through four assignments, student presentations and reviews with invited critics. The final grade was given on the integration of all assignments into a coherent urban architectural project. The learning outcome of the integrated knowledge course was evaluated and graded through a written essay.
